Dressing code

Dear all,

Some of you have asked about the dressing code, especially for dinners. In general, for all the activities casual dressing is OK. For dinners on Monday and Tuesday the dressing code is formal–casual.

Just a suggestion.

Kind regards,

Manuel and Sandra

Cash machines and activities on Thursday afternoon / evening

Dear all,

You might find useful to know that you can pay the taxi at the airport terminal with credit card. Also, there are several cash machines located at the different airport terminals. You may be arriving at terminal A or B, depending on which airline you are traveling with, and in both terminals you will find these services.

Also, you will find banks and cash machines located in the shopping centre where the hotel is located. See and .

On Thursday afternoon we are planning a sightseeing of Fundidora Park ( see ). Weather permitting, we will take a boat to go through Santa Lucía canal or we will go to the science museum at Horno3 ( see ). These are very interesting places to visit, and are part of the main attractions of Monterrey. Dinner will take place also at Fundidora Park.

So, Thursday will be a long day, having an early start, visiting schools, returning to campus, and then spending the afternoon / evening at Fundidora Park. Please ensure bringing your vitamins for extra energy during the week ;–) We are sure it will be a very nice experience for everybody.

Warm regards,

Manuel and Catherine

Voltage and frequency

• Power plug adapter needed: Yes
• Power sockets: type A / B
• Voltage: 127 V
• Frequency: 60 Hz
• At 127V, Mexico has a lower voltage than the UK (230 V). The frequency of 60Hz differs also from the UK(50 Hz). You can not use your electrical appliances without a power converter. Laptops, tablets, cameras, smartphones, electric toothbrushes, etc, usually can be used in Mexico, as in most other countries of the world.
• Look for the following statement on the charger: 'INPUT: 100-240V, 50/60 Hz'.

Power plugs and sockets

In Mexico the power sockets used are of type A / B. For power sockets of type A / B you need a power plug adapter.

Airport Information

There are two help and information desks at the airport: one is located in National Arrivals and the other in International Arrivals.
Transfer between terminals:
Free minibus shuttles operate between the three terminals from 0500-0000.
Taxi: Several taxi companies provide services to/from the airport, you may buy the ticket there just leaving the claim luggage place (journey time: 30 minutes; fares around 20 sterling pounds [300 pesos]). Rates are based on a zone system, and also depend the kind of vehicle and number of passengers.

Important: We will refund the fare from airport to hotel Fiesta Inn. In order to get the refund, you have to give us the official receipt you get after buying it at the airport terminal. At the end of the workshop we will also refund taxis from hotel Fiesta Inn to the airport. In order to do this you will need to send us a scanned copy of your receipt or a digital official receipt by mail to Sandra Gudiño.

City transportation

Taxis are the best way to get around Monterrey. They are reasonably cheap and are usually never more than 5-8 sterling pounds to get around the city (100 – 150 pesos). If you don’t speak Spanish try and write down the address where you are going because the driver probably wont speak English. Most places (Hotels & Restaurants) will call a taxi for you if you ask. This is the safest way to get them.

Please do not take taxis directly on the street.

Taxis companies and telephones:

Uber is also available in Monterrey. See

Important: We will refund the fare of up to 120 pesos per participant or group of participants (please share taxis), for the taxis used on Wednesday 11 and Friday 13, providing the official receipt provided by taxi driver or Uber receipt.

Dinners on Wednesday 11 and Friday 13

Important: We will refund the cost of these dinners with an amount of up to 200 pesos per person. Alcohol will not be reimbursed. You will need to provide an official receipt (printed or digital).

Other meals before 9th February and after 13th February within your itinerary

Important: We will refund the cost of these meals with an amount of up to 200 pesos per person per day. Alcohol will not be reimbursed. You will need to provide an official receipt (printed or digital).

In Mexico, you will need to provide the following details to ask for an official receipt (digital or printed):

Instituto Tecnológico y de Estudios Superiores de Monterrey
Calle del Puente # 222
Col. Ejidos de Huipulco
14380 Tlalpan, México D. F., México
RFC: ITE430714KI0

(please note that in the previous line, the first letter after RFC: is “i”, the last number is zero, and the letter before the zero is “i” – apologies for these details part of the Mexican fiscal bureaucracy – without the correct details, we cannot reimburse receipts)

Message sent on behalf of Dr Catherine Montgomery, University of Hull and  Dr Juan Manuel Fernández-Cárdenas, Tecnológico de Monterrey
Dear all,
We are delighted that you will be joining us on the British Council Researcher Links: Educational Dialogue and transformative learning in STEM subjects in Mexico and the UK. We hope that your travel plans are underway and that you are all looking forward to the week which we believe will be stimulating, fruitful and enjoyable! We have a very impressive group of 15 Mexico-based researchers and 15 UK-based researchers coming together with two UK-based mentors/senior researchers and three Mexico-based mentors/senior researchers.

On the Mexican side our mentors are Dr Rebeca Mejia Aruaz (ITESO), Dr Manuel Flores (Tecnológico de Monterrey) and Dr Lupita Rodriguez (UANL). Our UK mentors are Dr Sara Hennesy from the University of Cambridge and Professor Rupert Wegerif from Exeter University. Dr Manuel Fernandez and I are the workshop coordinators and will also act as mentors/senior researchers on the project.

We would like to begin to get to know you and for you to know each other a little in advance of the week’s workshop. To this end we are going to begin by asking you to write a brief 500 word summary of your research interests and the way that you see your research relating to the focus of the workshop. You could include three or four key references so that we can see where your work is located in the field. In addition to this we would like to set up an online group so that you can upload a profile and interact in advance of the workshop. We intend to achieve the online group using a combination of Ning and ResearchGate. More on this later!

In the meantime we would like you to send us your 500 word summaries by Friday 23 January at the latest. Please send these to Anna Hodgson our project administrator ( ).

We will be back in touch very soon with some more information about the programme for the week. In the meantime if you have any questions about travel or accommodation please get in touch with Anna Hodgson or Sandra Gudiño

With best wishes

Catherine and Manuel
